blueberries and raspberries

Asked October 12, 2019, 3:52 PM EDT

I have a couple blueberry plants of unknown variety. I'd like to add a couple more. But I there are so many varieties, and I don't know which ones are best suited to my locale. Please recommend an appropriate variety or varieties. I am refreshing my raspberry bed. I had 'Heritage' red raspberries before and like the flavor but had some (fairly minor) disease problems, and am wondering if there is a more suitable variety to plant here? Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi- please review our lists of recommended cultivars:

Blueberry- Southern highbush and Northern highbush cultivars grow well in Central MD.
Red raspberry- 'Heritage' was the standard for primocane-bearling "fall" raspberries. There are many choices today. 'Caroline', 'Jaclyn', and 'Josephine' are popular in MD gardens. You can reduce diseases by providing ample space between plants and pruning out excess shoots in spring when they emerge in spring (at least 6-in. between shoots).
