Dry weights

Asked October 11, 2019, 7:07 PM EDT

My recipe for green tomato relish calls for 4 quarts of tomatoes. Then I go on to chop them. Is this a dry weight measure, and if so, how much is a quart?

Would love to see your recipe. Usually when it is in measurements like cups and quarts they mean chopped. A good estimate is 5 pounds of tomatoes will yield approximately 10 cups chopped tomatoes. Of course this can vary by how large or coarse the tomatoes are chopped. You can also figure approximately 3-4 small tomatoes per pound. Hope that helps Thanks for using Ask an Expert Nellie Oehler
