Antler rub on my tree

I just discovered that a buck rubbed its antlers on our front yard tree we planted this past spring. Is there anything I can to to prevent further damage or death? I plan to wrap the trunk it in chicken wire to prevent a repeat visit from the deer. However, is my tree going to survive? Anything I can do? Thank you in advance!!

I think it is unlikely your tree will survive and you should be considering a replacement.

If you are going to attempt to save it, you should carefully cut away the ragged dead bark. Don't cut into undamaged tissue. Don't wrap it. Then, as you suggested, use chicken wire to prevent further damage. Read here:
