Mysterious Bark Damage

Asked October 9, 2019, 6:10 PM EDT

Tulip Poplar has several spots on trunk where bark appears to be torn away. Could squirrels be the culprit? My inquiry is to determine if u have seen this phenomena. Pics attached.

Hi- This type of physical damage could have been done by a woodpecker, squirrel, or even a deer rubbing against the tree. It looks like there is at least one borer hole in the damaged area. A woodpecker or squirrel may have been trying to get to a source of food. This is not unusual to see on a mature tree.

Many thanks!
