What's Happening to the Bumble Bees?

Asked October 9, 2019, 12:21 PM EDT

Hello Cooperative Extension Expert, The marigolds in my window boxes have been the delight of the bumble bees this summer, and the bumble bees have been my delight. Now the bees are slowing down and I have seen some die. Is this normal? Thank you for your answer. Best regards, Germaine Timmermans

Hi - We're glad to hear you enjoyed the flowers and the bumblebees this summer. Only the mated queens will survive the winter by hibernating. The rest of the bumblebees will die. This is normal for their life cycle. https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/lifecycle/
Plan to add new flowers next year for them and you can enjoy the next generation.
