Can you tell what this plant is? The larger leaves are about 8". Leaves are velvety and stems slightly furry.

Insufficient information in the picture. Best guess is in the mallow family, perhaps Abutilon theophrasti, aka Velvetleaf. Usually it would have flowered and be ending its cycle for this year by now, however.

That sounds very likely. Not a hope of getting flowers at this time of year. It just came up a few weeks ago; goodness only knows where it came from. I have an elecampane that also has velvet leaves, but a quite different shape, grows to 8', and has yellow flowers. It seems to be a perennial.

Elecampane is a perennial and self-sows very freely. It is also medicinal and pretty. Thank you for the feedback.
