Horse Boarding Facilities - Question

Asked October 8, 2019, 1:58 PM EDT

Good morning,

I received a call from someone in regards to horse boarding facilities. This person has been concerned about their safety and their horse's safety at a horse boarding facility they are currently at. They want to know where they can find out more about state laws regarding keeping horses at a boarding facility so they know what they should do moving forward. Also, they want to move their horse to their backyard (I think temporarily) and wants to know if there are any state laws around that too.

Any resources, websites, etc. you could share would be helpful!

Thanks, Tara

Laws relative to equine riding stables/boarding facilities can be found here: https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/0,4610,7-125-1569_16979_21262---,00.html

You can also find supplemental information in the Michigan Generally Accepted Agricultural Management Practices (Michigan GAAMPs). https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/0,4610,7-125-1599_1605---,00.html

Townships may have specified requirements on how much property you need to house a large animal such as a horse, so it would be advisable to contact your local township office.
