My church has a Maple tree and its leaves have black spots on them. Someone said it is called Tar spot and only found on maple trees. I tried looking that up on the Ohio line site but nothing came up. They are concerned about the tree and want to know if it would spread to other trees. I am unable to upload a picture.

Tar spot is a fungal condition that affects maples and other susceptible trees and shrubs. It is most often a cosmetic problem rather than a serious disease and treatment is generally not warranted. However, collecting and removing the affected leaves as they fall may help reduce the problem in the future. Here are links to further information:
