Too late for any fall plants?

Asked October 2, 2019, 11:27 PM EDT

Zone 7b in md I see some online nurseries still have kale, broccoli, cauliflower plants for sale. Is it too late to plant anything? What else could be planted outside? Lettuces or salad greens from seed?

There are still some things that can be planted now for harvest in the future, such as garlic and rhubarb.
With some help from season extending materials like floating row cover or cold frames (https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/floating-row-cover) you can try planting lettuce, spinach, arugula, and kale through the middle of the month. Cover these late plantings with a cold frame, temporary greenhouse, or floating row cover. Be sure to fertilize seedbeds, keep the soil moist, and protect seedlings from pests. The young plants will go dormant and re-grow in spring.

Here is a great page from our website with information not only on individual crops, but also planting dates for them: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/crops for future reference.
