Can I still plant columbines in Oct?
Douglas County Colorado
You can still plant columbines now but we are rapidly approaching our first average freeze date so it might be iffy. Wouldn't it be nice if we had that crystal ball to know when the freeze would hit? I would probably go for it if I was given the columbines or found them at a deep discount but I wouldn't pay full price for anything at this time of the year. That's just me.
If you decide to go for it, after you plant, a 3" layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help when the temperatures drop. Make sure to water well for the first couple of weeks.
