Fruit Tree Spraying

Asked September 30, 2019, 5:19 PM EDT

Does the University Extention a service provide a risk and spray schedule for the Berlin MD area for Apples, Pears, Peaches, and Plums? If not where can I get this information during the spray season? I currently have apples and Pears. Can stone fruit be grow successfully and with relative ease in the ermine MD area? Which varieties of stone fruit are recommended for my area?

Hi- the fruit plants you mention are all highly vulnerable to pest insects and diseases. The degree to which you observe problems early on is a function, in part, of how many other gardeners/farmers are growing the same fruits. You can be lucky for several years if there are few fruit trees growing in your neighborhood but the pest/disease issues will eventually find your trees with great reliability. Brown rot is one of the principal diseases of stone fruit and peachtree borer, Oriental fruit moth, plum curculio, and plant bugs are some of the key pests.

We recommend that MD gardeners follow the VA Tech spray recommendations for backyard fruit:
