What evergreen to plant in deep shade large planters

Asked September 29, 2019, 11:35 AM EDT

I have a couple of 3x5’ stone planters sitting in deep shade. I would like to plant evergreen shrubs that won’t suffer if not watered daily.

Montgomery County Maryland

That sounds lovely.
A couple of issues to consider....
* do the planters have good drainage in the bottom? (A must)
*do you have many problems with deer?
*would you consider, given the deep shade, a welcome pop of color in these planters?

Possible plants include Yews (Must have good drainage), Inkberries, Hollies, Pieris floribunda, and some Rhododendrons.

If deer are a problem, here is our list of deer resistant plants: https://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/non_HGIC_...
