Is there a way to revive this old rhododendron that is getting thinner each year?

Rhododendrons are never really thick in the shade. Mature rhododendron usually require little pruning beyond shaping, as well as, to remove dead or diseased wood. You can prune back the shrub to about 18 to 24 inches after it flowers in the spring.
Flowering may be delayed for several seasons.
