Ball Python Scales

Asked September 22, 2019, 5:24 PM EDT

When I hold my ball python I can feel his scales like poking up and touching me, is that normal for his scales to do that and for me to feel them?

Thank you for your question. If you mean you can feel the edges of your snake's scales poking against your skin if you are moving your hand from the tail of the snake towards the head, then this is normal, however, you should always move your hand from the head towards the tail. This will prevent you from catching the tips of the scales. If you are saying that you can look at the snake and see the tips of the scales pointing up, then this is not normal, and you should consult a reptile veterinarian.

I hope this information helps, and thank you for contacting Ask an Expert.
