We removed a maple tree last year and now where the stump was, I found this today and it's creeping me out. Do you know what this is?

It's some type of fungal growth. Many fungi, such as the bird's nest fungus, break down woody material in the soil. There is likely a considerable amount of woody material in the soil upon the removal of the tree.

These fungi are not harmful to landscape plants. There are no known health hazards associated with them unless they are eaten.
