Elusive Moles

Asked September 19, 2019, 3:52 PM EDT

This is my first flower garden. The soil is fantastic, at least the moles think so. The flowers like the soil, as well, until the mole tunnels under them. Then they up and die. We had 2 mole companies out here and they cannot catch any. What am I to do?? Thank you so much.

There are no chemical repellents currently registered for use on moles. Killing their food source, grubs, can be effective but the use of pesticides can have serious disadvantages. When the food supply is eliminated, moles may actually increase their digging in search of food before leaving the area, possibly increasing damage to turf or garden areas.

Moles do not readily take poisoned baits and fumigants are largely ineffective since moles can detect gases and quickly wall off the treated tunnels.

Trapping is the most successful strategy, The traps shown in the Penn State Fact sheet are set over a depressed portion of the surface tunnel. These should work, even in clay. The fact sheet describes how to locate active tunnels and set the trap.

Here is a video that shows how to use the spring loaded/prong style trap.
