Preparing asparagus for winter

Asked September 18, 2019, 6:43 AM EDT

My Jersey Supreme asparagus has displayed its red berries since July. When do I cut it back and what else do I have to do to preserve it through the winter?

Hi, "jersey Supreme" is an "all-male" or "male dominant" hybrid meaning you should have none to very few female plants (make red berries) out of a bundle of 25 crowns. If a majority of your plants have red berries you are not growing an all-male hybrid.

Foliage should be cut down and removed after the first frost and crowns shouldbe mulched with shredded leaves or compost.
