What is getting my asparagus?

I have had asparagus for years. This year is the first that the stalks appear to be broken off about 18" from the ground & left there? Would like your opinion about what is happening. I am concerned, they won't reseed then for next year with the upper fronds broken off.

A photo would have been useful. For instance, the characteristics of the cut could give a clue. Some possibilities: rabbits, cutworms, humans, hail, slugs, and so on.

Asparagus is a perennial. It does not reseed each year. The plant propagates from the underground root system. We don't recommend cutting spears past the first of July so that the plant's above-ground foliage can recharge the roots. You are unlikely to lose your crop for next year. Read here:
