Maple Tree Issues
I noticed the maple trees in my yard looking like they have some type of mites or bugs and the leaves are dying. Some have a webbing to them even. I want to make sure this will not injure my tress permanently, or that my dog won't be affected by the bugs. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you. Marilyn Warmuskerken
Nathaniel answered your insect questions, he is a professional entomologist.
None of the possible insects will harm you or your dog. Some “wooly” caterpillars, those with long protruding hairs, can cause skin irritation if picked up and handled.
As Nate noted, when trees are healthy they easily recover from this temporary leaf loss. To help your trees, if you have a very dry spell this fall, you can deeply water the trees so their root systems have watered stored up for over winter.
Soil should be moist 6-12 inches down but not be soggy or sticky or flooded.
