Grape Vine Identification

Asked September 15, 2019, 12:21 PM EDT

Hello! I inherited a fruitful grape vine from the previous home owner. Can you help me identify what these grapes are and if they are edible? Any tips for harvesting and pruning? Thanks!

Thank you for using Ask an Expert for help with your new grapes. Well, they certainly look to be in fine shape. They appear to be table grapes, but there are some things to look for to narrow down the variety.

Take a look at “Growing Table Grapes” from the Oregon Extension Service .See here: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/ec1639.pdf. This is quite an extensive publication, but flip to the back Appendix A for descriptions of various local varieties.

  • Do the grapes have seeds?
  • When did the grapes ripen? “Early” varieties have been harvested weeks ago.
  • Are the grapes round or more oval?
  • Are they large (like the ones in the grocery store) or smaller?

These observations will help you pinpoint the likely type. You can also check with variety lists on the website of local garden centers, for varieties they may carry in addition to the ones mentioned in the publication.

This brochure also has information on pruning and caring for your vines in the future.

Enjoy your fruit,
