Apple trees black fungus

Asked September 14, 2019, 10:34 AM EDT

I have a couple of apple trees that have some black areas on the trunk or branch. Would you be able to tell me what this is and what a remedy might be? I'll attach a photo.

The cankered region on the trunk plus the shelf fungi indicates that significant amount of the trunk is non-functional. It is hard to know what started the problem....disease, possibly fire blight, cracks from cold damage. There is no corrective measure but you may have many more years of production which will decrease as more of the trunk is affected.
