Fruit tree trunk damage

Asked September 12, 2019, 12:38 PM EDT

I have several dwarf and semi dwarf fruit trees planted in containers. Most of them have developed open weeping (like drops of pitch) wounds in the lower part of the trunk, but still produce fruit. What causes this and can it be treated?

Bark wounds and cankers have various causes, so there isn’t a blanket solution I am able to offer. I suggest contacting your County Extension Service Master Gardener Volunteers via phone or email, as it will be an easier way to have a conversation about multiple issues than this web-based system.
