Reforestation of newly cleared acerage

Asked September 11, 2019, 3:13 PM EDT

Which is better to plant in our 17 acres at approx 1100 ft elevation on the edge of Dixie Mt. off Skyline Blvd near the Mult/WA county line? Are 1-1 more hearty than 2-0? Also any other advice of when etc.. to burn the slash piles, how to burn them, and how to prep the soil and who to use as a nursery and a tree planter?

The species selection also depends on local site conditions such as soil texture, and depth within others, as well water availability. It seems like you would benefit greatly with a visit of a local forestry extension agent. Either Amy Grotta https://extension.oregonstate.edu/people/amy-grotta or Glenn Ahrens https://extension.oregonstate.edu/people/glenn-ahrens might be able to give you better information after visiting your property. They might also be able to have a Master Woodland Manager to give you a visit. As far as burning slash piles, it is always best to cover a small spot so it is dry during the wet season when burning is allowed. Contact the Oregon Department of Forestry before burning to check on Smoke regulation in your area and burning permit requirements, more information here: https://www.oregon.gov/odf/fire/pages/burn.aspx
All the best,
