Strange snake identification

Asked September 10, 2019, 5:40 PM EDT

I found this small snake crawling in the wheel of my truck. It is about 8 inches long and appears to be a baby. The body is dark brown with grey markings somewhat like a boa constrictor. It is very aggressive, coiling and striking at me when I approach it. Can you identify it? I’ve never seen a snake this color or this aggressive in Michigan.

Hi!

The snake in your photos is an eastern milk snake. It is a fairly common snake species in Michigan, and is harmless - although they will try to defend themselves when they feel threatened.

Beautiful snake!
