Hopefully, the following will help you determine if you have moles or voles. There is also the definite possibility that you have both.

Voles - Look for runway systems, one to two inches wide, with many burrows in your lawn and/or ornamental beds. They feed on the roots of trees and shrubs and cause plant damage. Control involves trapping with mouse traps baited with apple slices or peanut butter. See our website for more information http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/voles

Moles - create raised tunnels in soils and feed on soil insects including earthworms. They do not cause plant damage. Moles usually move on when their food supply and habitat changes. Their activity is seasonal and in most cases activity stops on its own and control is not needed. Tamp down raised tunnels with your foot when it is not wet so you do not compact the soil. It is possible some reseeding may be needed.
