Sudden increase in snakes in and around house

Asked September 6, 2019, 10:11 PM EDT

We have had an increase in numerous ring neck snakes over the last two weeks, in the house. Our neighbor just had a black snake in their basement. Is this increase normal (natural) for right now? Weather related? Looking for reasons for the increase.

Montgomery County Maryland wildlife snakes indoors

It has been very hot and dry. Wildlife are looking for a cool place and may find their way indoors like basements. These snakes are beneficial and harmless.
Prevent them from coming indoors by caulking all openings around the house, especially windows and doors. To discourage snakes from living close to your house, remove stacks of firewood, leaves or other debris from near the home. Snakes like to hide in dense vegetation and debris.
