Ornamental Plum Tree problem

Asked September 3, 2019, 5:35 PM EDT

Plum tree did not flower as prolific this year as most. Leaf coverage is less dense than normal. There are black growths on many branches (pics attached). I didn't pay attention last year due to health issues, but growths weren't there in 2017. Tree is about 18 years old & has, until now been gorgeous and healthy. Is this the end of the road or do you think it can be saved? Thanks. Mike

Most likely this tree will need to be replaced soon. Sorry to say this because it looks like it is an important part of your landscape. Ornamental fruit trees such as plum and cherry are not long-lived trees in Maryland. They have a lifespan of about 15-25 years. The black growths on the branches is black knot. Other than pruning there is not a control for this disease.
