While it is tempting to apply a wound dressing to a pruning cut, there is no need to seal any wound on a tree. . This age-old practice has been shown by several research scientists to be of no benefit to the tree and can even harbor disease organisms. Painting, sealing with tar, or using another product to seal a pruning cut, even a large one, often does more damage by sealing in moisture or disease and promoting decay. If the tree is kept healthy it will take care of itself.
