Brown spots on my pear's
I have brown spots on the underside of my pears. I can scrape off the stops mostly, and the spot doesn't seem to go deeper into the flesh. Meaning it stays on the outside (peel). Is the pear safe to eat? How do I correct this for next year? Many thanks.
This looks like pear scab, similar to apple scab. Read here:
Pear scab is usually not a serious problem, but we had a very wet year this season. Careful cleanup this fall should reduce the chances that it will appear as a problem next year.
If you cut away the lesions, the remaining fruit should be perfectly fine. However, the lesions form a pathway for rotting organisms, so the fruit won't keep very well.
