Invasive grass

Asked August 30, 2019, 5:33 PM EDT

My lawn is being overrun by invasive grass. I would like to know what I can do to get rid of it. I do not want to fertilize until I have eliminated my problem. I am sending photos to help you identify the grass

This is Japanese Stilt Grass, an annual grass that is highly invasive but can be controlled by hand pulling if the area is small and applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring to suppress seed germination. Regular mowing will keep it from going to seed. See https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/japanese-stiltgrass for a helpful explanation of this grass' life cycle, growing conditions and management.
