Hi there! I took these pictures of our one and only tree today and noticed some black fungus like material at the base of the branches. Is there anyone there that knows what this is or if it is treatable? This is our one and only tree that we planted in 2012 when we miscarried. Would hate to lose it. Any information would help. Thanks. Holly kunkle

I don't think your tree is in any immediate danger. It looks to me like a red maple.
I would be happy to stop be and look at it if you would call and leave me your address.
I would also like to see if the tree needs to be pruned.
Red Maples sometimes develop narrow branch angles which are best corrected when young. 859-586-6101
