What is this weed

Asked August 25, 2019, 3:09 PM EDT

I recently found this plant growing in a raised bed. I have never seen anything like it, with these berries. I am most curious about the berries: are they good for birds or poisonous?

Multnomah County Oregon plant identification black nightshade solanum nigrum

This looks like Solanum nigrum, Black Nightshade. It's a common weed in the Willamette Valley. It's in the tomato family. All parts of the plant are considered to be moderately toxic to humans and animals, but because it's not palatable, it's rarely eaten by livestock. Birds eat it, though, and that's how the seeds are spread far and wide. This is a weed of concern in the agriculture industry.
