Unusual-looking moth

Asked August 24, 2019, 7:49 PM EDT

We saw this moth (?) today and are curious about what it is. A field guide didn't help particularly. We have an increasingly thriving environment for pollinators in Federal Hill at Digital Harbor High School, Baltimore, and never saw this one before. It was an inch+ long and sat still for some time on basil. Thanks!

This looks like a hummingbird clearwing moth. It is a native insect and a good pollinator. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=108
