Hyacinth bark loss

My hyacinths are shedding bark revealing wood.

These look like lilacs.
The first photo shows small patches of bark loss, which is typical work of the European hornet. This non-native hornet scrapes off bark to get to sap. It particularly likes lilacs.

They tend to go for the older branches of lilac. Since lilac produce new suckers each year, it's not a bad idea to prune out a few of the oldest branches each spring after they bloom.
