Maryland native annuals for part sun

Asked August 23, 2019, 3:52 PM EDT

I planted a butterfly garden this year and am preparing another section of lawn area to add more flowers in the spring. I would like to plant annuals for continuous color and to attract more butterflies and hummingbirds. Do you have a list of native annuals for this area that gets part sun, light shade.? I live in North Potomac in Montgomery County.

Hi - There are quite a few native annual plants, but most of them are not showy and therefore they are difficult to find commercially. Some options are:

Blue Toadflax (Linaria canadensis)
Blue Curls (Trichostema dichotoma)
Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata)
Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis)
Sweet Everlasting (Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium)

For a hummingbird/butterfly garden in part sun/part shade, you might consider the following perennial plants:
Eastern columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
Golden groundsel (Packera aurea)
Bee balm (Monarda sp.)
Asters (Symphyotrichum sp.)
