Raspberry bush

Asked August 21, 2019, 4:35 PM EDT

Hello, I am a very beginner for gardening. I have heard that you could help me to find out questions at a farmers market booth in Houghton.

Attached are the photos for two raspberry bushes I transplanted. I also want to plant Elliot blueberries and basil.

I read that Raspberry roots will expand widely even over unwanted places. So, my questions are:

First, how should I put fences for the raspberry garden to protect other plants?

Second, can I make blueberry and veggie beds right next to the raspberry garden?

Thank you,

Raspberries like full sun and well-drained, organic soil. From the photos, it looks like yours are either needing more water and/or more nutrients. We always suggest first getting a soil test to know what your soil has. You can either go to your local Houghton MSUE office: https://www.canr.msu.edu/houghton/ or go online: https://homesoiltest.msu.edu/get-started to purchase a soil test.
Raspberries will spread even across and under fences, so designate a specific area you want them to grow into. here is an extension resource that explains more about growing them:

Blueberries are going to require a 4.5 to 5.5 pH. This is lower than what raspberries prefer, so be sure you get the site 's soil tested where you intend to grow blueberries to see if it needs to be amended. here is more information: https://extension.umn.edu/fruit/growing-blueberries-home-garden
