Norway spruce trimming

Asked August 21, 2019, 2:48 PM EDT

I have Norway spruce that I planted 22years ago. They are about 30'tall. I have branches that are growing into the driveway. How far back can I trim them without damaging the trees?

Van Buren County Michigan

Hello,

You can prune back to just before the branch collar, a slightly thicker area against the tree trunk. To maintain some green growth on a branch you prune back, be sure there are several groups of green needles left on the cut end. See the illustration showing “undeveloped fascicular bud” in this reference -
