Tall shade trees, not maples

Asked August 19, 2019, 8:40 PM EDT

Looking for 3-4 varietals of tall, reasonably fast growing deciduous shade trees. We already have one red maple and our neighborhood has way too many maples. We need some variety! I prefer taller (30-50+ feet) with vase shaped crowns. Not round "spreaders". Clean trees please. We'll plant them together (aprox 20' spacing) in direct sun. The objective is to shade the south side of the house. Suggestions? Thank you!

Hello, there are several trees that would serve your purpose. Before you plant you need to assess the site, especially the soil so you can choose the right tree for the site. I suggest that you have the soil analyzed. Go to https://homesoiltest.msu.edu/get-started to obtain a soil test kit. I’m attaching an article from MSU Extension which lists several trees and their attributes which will help you make your decision. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/native_plants_for_michigan_landscapes_part_1_trees I hope this helps.
