Help indentifying new garden growths

Asked August 18, 2019, 6:22 PM EDT

Hello, What are these new growths in my garden? I am finding them in only one of four garden boxes. The same soil was used in all-a mixture of compost, top soil, and mushroom compost. Are they harmful to growing plants? Please see attached pictures. Thank you, Lisa

Marion County Oregon mulch fungus

Thank you for your question. I can see three different species of fungus in your photos. They grow naturally on decomposing fiber (wood), which is a source of food for them. Species are specific to the species of fiber in the mixture, which probably isn’t listed on the sack. Many of these will die when exposed to light, heat, and arid conditions. (I suspect there are already fewer of them.) Here is an Extension article on mulch that explains these growths: http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/FS160E/FS160E.pdf Without them, we would have no recycling of nutrients. They will not injure you. Good luck!
