Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) likes sandy soils and tolerates dry to moist soils, It is frequently found in disturbed areas since it doesn't do well with competition. Other milkweeds like Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed) and Asclepias incarnata (swamp milkweed), like common milkweed, are good for monarch butterflies but are less weedy. Common milkweed seeds need cold stratification so a fall or winter sowing works well.
I hope this helps,
