Sassafras Trees Dying

Asked August 16, 2019, 1:37 PM EDT

Hello, Over the last 18 months I have had several large sassafras trees die in my backyard. Is this a known issue in Maryland and is there anything I can do to prevent the other sassafras trees from dying? Ken

Are the affected Sassafrass trees in poor-draining soil? Sassafrass is intolerant of waterlogged soil, and last year's excessively rainy weather may have caused root problems if the trees aren't in a well-drained area. We are not aware of any disease or pest that is affecting Sassafrass trees in particular.
