Plant with red berries

Asked August 15, 2019, 7:18 PM EDT

I found this plant growing on our property, but have been unable to identify it. I have young children and have been trying to find out if the berries are poisonous. Any help you could give would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks for your question. The plant appears to be in the plum/cherry family. Possibly a chokecherry or serviceberry both of which grow wild here in Colorado. Because we don't see the flowers (they appeared earlier this summer), we are unable to tell you definitively what the specific plant it is. While the berries on both plants are not poisonous, the leaves and other parts of the tree/bush contain a cyanide like compound which can be poisonous. To get a more accurate and reliable answer -we are not able to advise you about the safety of plants- you can call the Rocky Mountain Poison Control Center 800-332-3073, they are qualified to advise you about poisonous plants.
