Garden bug -- problem??

Asked August 15, 2019, 2:23 PM EDT

I'm having difficulty identifying this insect & thus knowing whether I should be concerned. It's covering my coneflowers right now. There's also a lot of tiny orange dot-like insects on my butterfly weed -- I don't know if they're the same insects. I'm an organic gardener -- please advise whether I can just ignore these bugs or I should take steps to eradicate them. Thanks!

Hi - These are milkweed bugs, a common visitor to milkweeds and other garden plants at this time of year. Unless you intend to save seeds from your milkweed, no control is needed. Refer to this article for information about them.

It sounds like you are also seeing oleander aphids -- another common visitor on milkweed plants. These can be dislodged with a strong spray of water from a hose, or wear garden gloves and squish them by hand. Here is more information.https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/aphids-got-your-milkweeds
