Tulip Poplar Tree Root Making Walkway Pavers Uneven

Asked August 15, 2019, 1:22 PM EDT

The tree is taller than my 2 story house. One root is causing the 24"square pavers on walkway to house to be uneven and a hazard to people coming to house. I've been told that the tree will be ok if that root is shaved down 6 inches and the pavers relaid Is it true that the tree will be ok if root is shaved or is that too risky ? Other solution is to reroute walkway, but that would look very strange. Will very much appreciate your advice. Thanks, Marilyn Heavener

It is not a good idea to shave off a six-inch portion of the root; it will have an impact on the tree's health. It would be better to re-route your walkway around it. http://www.gfc.state.ga.us/community-forests/ask-the-arborist/TreeRoots-Driveways-Sidewalks.pdf
