Expiration of pellet fertillizer

Asked August 14, 2019, 1:52 PM EDT

We seem to buy new fertilizer each year for flowers and vegetables when the last year's container is still more than half full thinking it would go bad over the winter. The containers do not have an expiration date on them. How long does such fertilizer stay viable and safe? Are the out dated material safe to dispose of in the trash or should we take it to hazardous waste recycling?

Dry fertilizer should store well and be usable years later. If there are ingredients other than fertilizer (pesticide, or if liquid fertilizer) then check with the manufacturer about storage and expiration.
