Rare Butterfly?

Asked August 12, 2019, 4:01 PM EDT

Several days ago I spotted a butterfly that I had never seen before. I checked in my copy of Kaufman Butterflies of North America and it appears to have been a male Gulf Fritillaria. Do you have any other reports of this butterfly in this area? It is stunning orange above with large white blotches underneath.

The Maryland Biodiversity website is a good place to check. Do you have a photo?
There are about 10 hits when you begin to put 'frittilaria' in the search box.
Here is the page on Gulf Frittilary, and you can compare to the others: https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=543
It notes that it is found in a few counties here occasionally as vagrants from the south.
You can see by the map that Anne Arundel is not one of them.
