Viburnum leaf beetle

Asked August 12, 2019, 2:18 PM EDT

This beetle has destroyed my snowball bush here in southeast Michigan. Should I prune it back this fall? Leave it alone? Prune it in the Spring? I have already sprayed with insecticidal soap, but the damage is done. Thanks.

Viburnum leaf beetles cause can cause heavy defoliation. If this is the first year that you noticed Viburnum leaf beetle damage, the plant should recover the following season. 2 or more consecutive years of defoliation may kill the plants. In the Fall, you will want to remove any branches that have evidence of Viburnum beetle egg laying. The following document provides further guidance on how to do this.
