Crape myrtle are best pruned in the early spring before growth begins. As a general rule, we don't want to prune any woody plant between the middle of August and leaf drop. Of course, for flowering shrubs we prune one of two times, either right after bloom (for early bloomers like lilac, azalea, viburnum, forsythia, etc) or just before growth begins in early spring or late winter (for species that bloom later like crape myrtle, some hydrangeas, butterfly bush, etc).

Hope this helps.
