Dogbane forage

Asked August 11, 2019, 8:43 AM EDT

Anyone know whether cattle have been poisoned from eating hay with dog bane plants rolled into the hay grass? I didn’t know what it was until recently but I’m sure it has been in my hay grass for the past 3-4 years. I’m not aware of any livestock problems on my farm.

Hemp Dogbane is highly toxic to all livestock whether fresh or dry in hay. The good news that is tastes really bad and animals wont readily eat it. However there is a greater probability of consumption when it is mixed in hay. I recommend taking steps to control this weed in your hay field in the spring. A mixture of 2,4-D and Dicamba, Crossbow or Grazeon Next will all provide good control of Hemp Dogbane.
