Garter Snakes

Asked August 9, 2019, 11:34 PM EDT

I have not seen one Garter Snake this year. Is this a climate or cyclical thing or should I be concerned?

Thank you for your question. Annual weather conditions, predator populations and food availability can all limit populations of animals. It's possible that garter snakes aren't as prevalent this year as in past years, or in may just be that you haven't been lucky in spotting them. I checked for any articles on reduced populations in Nebraska this year, and did not find any mention of this being an issue. Also, iNaturalist logs observations of a variety of species, and people are seeing garter snakes in different areas of Nebraska.

I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. I hope this information helps, and thank you for contacting Ask an Expert.
